G-15 Lens Technology: Sightings

G-15 Lens Sightings

G-15 lenses are more popular than one might realize!

G-15 Lens Technology: How Does It Work?

How Does G-15 Work?

Green and yellow light are in the center of the light spectrum at 555 nanometers and are most easily perceived by the human eye. G-15 lenses maximize the transmission of these colors, decreasing the strain of focusing and creating a cooling sensation for the eyes. These lenses broadcast colors the same way the human eye receives them, resulting in true-to-life vision and less eyestrain. No other lens technology can boast these unique scientific properties.

G-15 Lens Technology: History

A Preventative Solution: G-15 Lenses

The history of G-15 technology dates back to the 1930s when newer airplanes allowed pilots to fly higher and farther than ever before. Many U.S. Army Air Service Pilots were reporting that the glare from the sun was giving them headaches and altitude sickness during flight. In 1929, U.S. Army Air Corps Lieutenant General John MacCready asked Bausch & Lomb, a New York-based medical equipment manufacturer, to create aviation lenses that would reduce the headaches and nausea caused by the intense blue and white hues of the sky. A new kind of lens was introduced in 1936: known as G-15 Anti-Glare, they featured green lenses that cut out the glare without obscuring vision.

G-15 Lens Technology: Eyestrain

The Problem? Eye Strain

According to the Mayo Clinic, Asthenopia (eye strain) is a debilitating ophthalmological condition. When concentrating on a visually intense task for long periods of time, the ciliary muscle tightens, causing pain that manifests itself through non-specific symptoms such as sore or irritated eyes, headaches, difficulty focusing, dry or watery eyes, blurred or double vision, increased sensitivity to light, and pain in the neck, shoulders, or back.

These symptoms not only cause one to be terribly uncomfortable, but can also decrease productivity. The pain may also be intensified by lack of sleep, a time when the eyes are replenished with essential nutrients. While getting more sleep and taking regular breaks can be helpful, there is a preventative measure that can stop eye strain before it starts.

Independently Tested and Compliant: CSA & MCEPS Standards

All Edge Eyewear glasses are tested in independent laboratories to assure their compliance with CSA Z94.3-07 and Military Ballistic MCEPS GL-PD 10-12 standards.

What is CSA Z94.3-07?

All Canadian eye safety standards are created by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). CCOHS enforces these standards and functions as the primary national agency in Canada for the advancement of safe and healthy workplaces and preventing work-related injury, illness, and death. Additional contributions to this standard are provided by provincial and territorial labour departments and workers' compensation boards.

What is Military MCEPS GL-PD 10-12 (Ballistic Standard)?

The current Military Combat Eye Protection Systems (MCEPS) standard is called MCEPS GL-PD 10-12, which superseded the MIL-PRF-31013 standard in April of 1996. This standard contains a series of tests that are much more aggressive than ANSI’s, such as ballistic fragmentation tests, to simulate projectiles and other dangers faced in combat.

Silver Mirror Lens

Silver Mirror lenses reflect light in bright conditions, decrease visible brightness, and reduce glare. A silver-colored mirror coating adds a reflective layer to the light-blocking properties of a smoke base tint. 13% of visible light passes through this lens color.

Polarized G-15 Silver Mirror lenses provide contrast and image definition while maintaining a neutral, true-to-life perspective. A silver mirror coating adds a reflective layer to the cooling properties of a green-colored base tint, a technology pioneered by the U. S. Air Force. The addition of a polarizing filter increases clarity by reducing glare. 11% of visible light passes through this lens color.

Why Eye Protection?

Edge Eyewear Canada is committed to maximizing eye safety. This serious responsibility requires rigorous testing to ensure compliance with the highest national standards. Every pair of Edge glasses is subjected to the toughest tests – because tough tests create tough glasses. When it comes to something as valuable as eyesight, we wouldn’t manufacture anything less than the best.

What are the statistics?
According to the Center for Disease Control, there are more than 10,000 eye injuries in North America every day. The Department of Labor has reported that 2,000 of these injuries require medical treatment and time off work, and the Bureau of Labor says 85% of these cases require up to 5 days off work. On the jobsite, 3 out of every 5 people who suffered an injury were not wearing any safety glasses at all because the glasses were “uncomfortable” or “unfashionable.” Many others were injured while wearing glasses that were not appropriate for their activity. The total amount of direct and indirect workers compensation claims for eye injuries exceeds 4 billion dollars each year. While it is not surprising that eye injuries happen on the jobsite, many are shocked learn that 63% of all eye injuries happen away from work; 47% at home and 16% while playing sports.

How does Edge Eyewear guarantee safe products?
To avoid improper safety evaluations and biases, all Edge Eyewear glasses are independently tested by professionals at SEI Laboratories. Surprisingly, many safety eyewear manufacturers choose not to test their products, while others perform their evaluations in-house. These practices present a serious conflict of interest. The integrity of testing and reporting can be compromised, resulting in non-compliant and unsafe eyewear. Edge Eyewear’s frequent third party testing guarantees compliance with ANSI Z87.1-2010 standards and CSA Z94.3-07 standards.

How can you find compliant eyewear?
Before purchasing any safety eyewear, we advise you to ask for proof. The ANSI standard in Section 2.3.5 states: “The protector manufacturer shall provide test results to the purchaser upon request.” Companies that are serious about safety will have third party test results readily available. Any brand that cannot or will not provide these test reports should not be trusted.

Copper Lens

Copper lenses make bright and variable conditions appear sharper and filter high levels of blue light. The reduction of this blue light relieves eye fatigue by increasing depth perception, making it the ideal tint for daytime driving and golfing. 8% of visible light passes through this lens color. Polarized Copper lenses have the same qualities, but their polarizing filter also increases clarity by reducing glare. 8% of visible light passes through Polarized Copper lenses.

The Right Features for You

Because facial structures differ and work environments vary, Edge® Eyewear provides solutions that meet a broad range of specific needs. Here are some of the unique features and benefits offered by Edge®:

VAPOR SHIELD© (Military-Grade Anti-Fog)
Most situations can be handled with Standard Anti-Fog lenses, but for extreme environments Edge® Eyewear developed a revolutionary, military-grade anti-fog technology called Vapor Shield©. It is completely resistant to fog.

Vapor Shield© lenses have passed the following laboratory tests:
  -44°F for 15 minutes
  Transition from -44°F to 76°F
  125°F with 80% humidity

Available in: Dakura, Robson, Robson Multi-Fit, Robson XL, Steele, Zorge G2
STANDARD ANTI-FOG
Unobstructed vision is essential when it comes to eye safety. Anti-Fog coating offers long-lasting clarity in humid, hot, or cold circumstances. Moisture rolls off the lens, keeping vision clear at all times.

Available in: Dakura, Steele, Tasman
POLARIZED
Polarized technology can be compared to the horizontal slats of open window blinds. These “slats” create a special filtering layer that blocks reflected light from below and glare from above, allowing only direct light rays to enter. This maximizes clarity and overall visibility and is ideal for environments with bright sun, snow, water, or sand. Polarized lenses are perfect for fishing and improve reaction time while driving.

Available in: Brazeau, Brazeau Torque, Brazeau White, Brazeau True North Black & Red, Brazeau True North Black & Grey, Brazeau True North White & Red Flag, Brazeau True North White & Ice, Brazeau Skull, Dakura, Khor, Khor Forest Camo Kit, Robson, Steele

XL (Wide Fit)
Head size varies from person to person and standard-sized glasses can be too small on the face or tight in the temples for those with larger heads. The solution is a wider frame that not only feels comfortable but also looks natural.

Available in: Robson XL
GASKETS
A foam gasket is essential to safety in environments with high levels of airborne debris, dust, or wind. This technology creates a seal that keeps foreign particles out of the glasses and away from the eyes.

Available for: Robson, Robson XL, Steele, Tasman
MULTI-FIT (Adjustable Nose Piece)
Multi-Fit glasses, sometimes referred to as Asian Fit, are specifically designed to accommodate a variety of facial and nose bridge structures. With the addition of an adjustable nosepiece, a perfect fit can be achieved by bending each flexible nose pad inward, outward, forward, or backward.

Available in: Robson
MAGNIFIERS
Safety means more than just covering the eyes – it is also about optical clarity. Edge© Eyewear’s bifocal reading glasses are perfect for intricate work and viewing fine details. They are available in three magnification powers (1.5, 2.0, and 2.5) and with polarized lens technology.

Available in: Zorge
LADIES STYLE
Ladies glasses are designed to meet fashion standards for women while also maintaining their safety rating. They won’t ride on the cheekbones, don’t touch the eyelashes, and are made with materials that will not snag the hair.

Available in: Mayon, Mayon Aurora Black & Grey Lace, Mayon Aurora White & Black Lace, Mayon Aurora Pink & White Lace, Mayon Aurora White & Zebra, Mayon Aurora Black & Plaid
FIT OVER Rx
Visual clarity is essential to safety and sometimes magnifier lenses aren’t enough to read or see fine details. Edge© Eyewear’s large safety glasses fit comfortably over most prescription eyeglasses.

Available in: Ossa
PRESCRIPTION
For those who require visual correction, several frame styles are available with the option of adding prescription lenses. The result is a perfect combination of sight and safety.
